A: Manufacturer-listed payload is typically calculated as: Payload = GVWR – Curb Weight

But in the real world, most vehicles don’t match their curb weight once they’re on the road. Things like:

• Accessories (toolboxes, bumpers, winches)

• Passengers

• Fuel

• Gear in the cab or bed

…all add weight before you even hook up a trailer.

Because of this, relying on a factory payload number can give a false sense of safety. Instead, TowCal focuses on actual, measurable values — like your truck’s total weight and axle loads — and compares those to official safety and legal limits (like GVWR, GCWR, axle ratings, tire limits, and hitch capacity).

So while payload is meant to help you stay under GVWR, TowCal calculates GVWR directly, using real numbers — making payload estimates unnecessary.

A: TowCal app does not collect any data except your the values you input. All of that data stays on device and is not sent outside through any method specific to the operation of TowCal. TowCal.com only collects information input into contact forms. This information will only be used to contact you to answer, questions, feedback, or to notify you of new feature releases. In the case of Beta Testing sign-up, your email address will be used to associate your AppleID to the beta builds of TowCal allowing you to download them. Your data will never be sold to a 3rd party. At any time, you can request to remove your data from TowCal.com by using the contact form. A final email will be sent acknowledging receipt, after which all of your information will be removed from TestFlight and TowCal.com. Since this website is hosted by Squarespace, I recommend referring to their privacy policy regarding any information they might collect as a hosting platform.
